Rolls Royce Avon Gas Turbine 1953
The Rolls Royce Avon engine was once the most widely manufactured gas turbine in the world. Over 11300 were built between 1947 and 1974. Rolls Royce began working on the Avon turbine in 1945. The design was more advanced and powerful than any other engine of its time. It powered 12 types of aircraft. Rolls Royce relied on Sheffield companies to provide the high quality steels and parts needed to build jet engines.
